A Guide to Wedding Cake Consultation

Rory Lemmon 8th of March 2023

The cutting of the cake is one of the highlights of any wedding. In fact, it's almost as much fun as eating the cake. Almost. But before you can get to that point, you need to make sure that you've picked the right cake for you. And that doesn't just mean the tastiest one. You're going to need to meet with bakers and look at a number of different options.

Knowing the right questions to ask at a cake consultation can be tricky. That's why we've put together a helpful guide to wedding cake consultation…

What does a cake consultation involve?

Essentially, a cake consultation is just a discussion between you and the cake maker about what you would like for your wedding cake. They will ask you questions and may show you some examples of their previous work. You can also ask them questions, or brief them if you already have an idea of what you want your cake to be.

Does a cake consultation include a tasting?

Cake consultations are not the same as tastings, however both can often be done in the same appointment. Once you have given the baker an idea of what you’re looking for, they can select some samples for you to try. This is why the consultation is so important - so that you can enjoy eating the cake!

What do we discuss at a cake consultation?

The short answer is, everything! From a baking point of view, they will need to know what flavour of cake you want, if you want any fillings, what colours you want, if there’s a theme to match, what decorations you want and whether you have any allergies.

They might also need to know some logistical details, such as the style of wedding and reception you’re having, whether the cake will need any setting-up on the day, and the date and time you would want to pick the cake up.

It might be a good idea to prepare as many answers to these questions as possible, whilst also thinking of any questions you might want to ask them.

What questions should I ask at a cake consultation?

If you're struggling to think of the right questions to ask the cake maker, here are some of the most important ones to keep in mind:

  • Are you free on my wedding date? (In the event that set-up is required)
  • Do you have a 'menu' of different cakes and pricing options?
  • What's your background in wedding baking?
  • Do you have a portfolio of cakes you've made previously?
  • Do you have any specialities or recommendations for my wedding cake?
  • Can you recreate a cake from a picture?

These questions are fairly common, and the baker will be happy to discuss them with you. It might be a good idea to sit down the night before your consultation and write down anything you would like to ask, so that you can feel totally comfortable with your cake choice.

That's it for our guide to wedding cake consultation. Don’t forget to check out our list of inclusive cake makers in the UK, and browse more of our handy wedding hints and tips!
